I hide my eyes

I hide my eyes
to protect this body,
to cover the glare and the noise
of the marketplace
and the busy-ness of the street.

I hide my eyes,
for these are lover's eyes —
and a look into them
may show you
yourself.

I hide my eyes,
for I tear too easily
at the beauty of the world
and the sorrow of the separate.

But they are open.
Behind the shade,
they are open to the womb,
watching the Charioteer
drive us all back home.
